Many environmentalists oppose oil exploration because of possible effects to the environment and surrounding wildlife.  The ongoing debate about development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is only one of many issues environmentalists raise in their effort to limit oil exploration.

Drilling accidents caused from blowouts, transportation, and storage are complications inherent in the production and distribution of oil.  Blowouts from high pressure oil cause spills and catastrophic explosions which kill workers and pollute the environment every year.

The majority of pacific oil is transported by tankers to the refinery.  Although rare, tankers can cause huge oil spills if they run aground or collide with another ship.   While accident rates have been declining for over 20 years, the possibility for catastrophic damages to the environment is ever present.
